As the refugee rights activists remember Reza Barati, man who was violently killed two years ago during offshore immigration detention, there are at lest two other un-natural deaths which we would have noticed.
(i) Fazel Chegeni, who was driven into suicide last year by extra-ordinarily long-term imprisonment. Circumstances known to us indicate that the Immigration Department through its mandatory detention regime has deliberately targeted this type of asylum-seeker(s), who would have been granted proper refugee status otherwise.
(ii) Ali Avaz, of the same Kurdish-Iranian asylum-seeker and friend of Fazel had committed suicide last year. Not during detention but driven by the the helplessness and dire personal circumstances. He was reportedly given a "safe heaven visa" (type of bridging visa) and living in the community at the time of his death.
Both of these men should have been granted a proper refugee visa since they were stateless Kurds from Iran. There were reports of at least 4 other individuals currently under detention also, with similar circumstances as Mr. Fazel Chegeni.
My suggestion to those under these circumstances, they should be encouraged firstly to obtain their FOI files from the Department of Immigration. Then those information, details of how and why of their circumstances, should be put onto Internet (WWW) for all of us to view.
The activists do work on the information come through normal media. However, to make our actions more effective, factually more accurate reports with enough political information are needed. To this end, the availability of your FOI files are a good start. Do help us to help yourselves, a message to all our friends asylum-seekers. -- In Solidarity, U Ne Oo, Sydney
